Love Sick

And Aubrey was her name. David Gates wrote the hit song Aubrey in 1972 and released it on Bread's album Guitar Man. It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard charts. This is a beautiful melancholy song about a love that was never fully realized. The song is about loving a girl and wishing to spend a lifetime with her but for some reason she disappeared. We are never really told why in the song, but just that the relationship was short-lived and now she is gone and he misses her so. I have not seen any official explanation but some have theorized that she died. One person said that they heard it was written by David about a neighbor whom he never really got to know. After she died suddenly, he felt remorse and wished he had gotten to know her. Another person pointed to the recent split with his wife. But no matter what the motivation, the song Aubrey is one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching songs written about an unrealized love. Try not to cry when you listen to it!

All the Greats

Richard Wayne Penniman, also known as Little Richard, recorded eight Girls Name Songs in 1956 and 1957. His best known and one of his biggest hits ever was Lucille, recorded in 1957 and written by himself and Albert Collins. Another one from Little Richard was on the flip side of his hit Bama Lama Bama Loo and it was called Annie's Back.

Music for all tastes

One thing I have learned since embarking on this song-list project is that there are Girls Name Songs in just about any music style you can think of. I have really enjoyed discovering songs that I truely enjoy from artists and groups that I normally would not have listened to. I have listed songs from Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Fleetwood Mac, Fountains of Wayne, Sarah McLachlan, The Calling, Dead Kennedys, LFO, Ray-J, Notorious B.I.G. and the list goes on and on! I hope you enjoy my list and please let me know of any songs I missed! Thanks, DJD

What is so special?

What is so special about a Girls Name Song? Who writes such a song and why? These are songs written about a friend, mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, or any girl or woman we care about. Someone cared enough about this girl to write a song about her. Is there anything more important than music written about a key person in our life; a person we admire, love, despise or cherish? Sure, some of these songs are just plain fun. But usually they are written about real people and real strong feelings. Listen to Steve Perry singing Oh, Sherrie. I first became interested in this kind of song as a young teenager. I remember feeling the unrequited love when Paul Anka sang about his yearning for Diana in 1957. And I remember the heart-break sadness of Ray Peterson in 1960 who sang Tell Laura I Love Her! And just like when we read a book, watch a movie, or listen to a story, these songs touch our hearts. We can easily relate to the words and feelings of the song; we feel the love. We smile, sigh, and cry right along with the singer. I hope you enjoy this list of songs and please feel free to share with me with suggestions for songs I missed or corrections to anything I post here or on my web site. Thanks, djd
